Ah, the Internet. You can find almost anything out there.
Hoegger Goat Supply. Goat Supplies since 1935.
Caprine Supply. Management supplies as well as basic cheesemaking supplies and equipment.
Premier Supplies. This Iowa company was originally geared to sheep, but has a lot of equipment that can be used for goats. They seem to be expanding to include other livestock as well. When we decided to start using a burdizzo to wether our Nigerian bucklings, the only one small enough to do the job properly was the Ritchey Nipper, only available in this country (as far as we can tell) through Premier. The Ritchey Nipper, used in Britain for lambs, is smaller than any other burdizzo we have seen, which makes it much easier for a woman to use. Fiasco Farm's excellent FAQ describes the use of the burdizzo technique. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page when you get there.)
The Nipper is an expensive tool, but we think it will be worth it in the long run because it appears to be a quality product. If you are going to buy a burdizzo (it's a brand name, like Xerox) for use on full-size bucklings, be sure to get an actual burdizzo and not a cheap knock-off. There are some burdizzo-type tools out there (not made by Burdizzo) which do not work as simply and reliably as the real thing. One thing to be aware of: in our experience with Nigerians, it can take up to six weeks to be absolutely sure that the tool has worked. Used properly, however, it would be extremely unusual for the Nipper not to work.
Molly's Herbals. Excellent herbal and holistic supplies from Fiasco Farm. Includes herbal wormers, immune support, tinctures and salves for goats and other animals.
New England Cheesemaking. Excellent hobbyist cheesemaking site, with all necessary supplies, recipes, and equipment for the home cheesemaker.
Dairy Connection. If you are a little more serious about your cheesemaking, Dairy Connection offers bulk and professional quality equipment and supplies. Good prices on cultures and starters, and they now offer a hobbyist as well as a professional site.
Glengarry. Professional level supplies, culture, equipment, and consulting service in dairy design.
PBS Animal Health. Big supplier of livestock management equipment. Sometimes has good specials on such essentials as wormers and vaccines.
Billy Goat Gruff. With the rising popularity of goats, the Tarter Gate company - a long-time quality manufacturer of fencing panels and other livestock equipment - has branched out from its focus on horses and cattle to begin producing equipment designed specifically for goats. We saw some of their product line at the '05 National Goat Show in Spokane, and it is really fantastic. Check it out at their web site. Then, if you are interested, start prodding your local feed store to supply it locally (they are based in Kentucky.) Very nice equipment.
Packing:
Northwest Pack Goats. Excellent training tips and equipment for teaching those gregarious wethers to carry all your stuff around for you. (Why should you carry it? You're the boss.) Saddles, panniers, packs, pads, lead ropes, training aids.
Summit Pack Goats. Offers animals for sale as well as photos and basic packing info.
High Uinta Pack Goats. Good packgoat site with a lot of tips. They also offer goat rentals.
Goat Tracks Magazine. Working Goat Journal produced by well-known Oregon goatpacker Carolyn Eddy.
The Whole Goat Catalog. The Whole Goat Catalog offers links to all kinds of boutique goat-related crafts and services - cards, soaps, gifts, cheese, fudge, artworks.
Ruminations. Bimonthly magazine published by Cheryl Smith, geared for breeders and lovers of Nigerian dwarf dairy goats and other miniature (mini-manchas, mini-Nubians, etc) dairy goats.
United Caprine News. All-breed goat journal.
Dairy Goat Journal. Dairy-specific goat periodical; recent issues feature articles on minerals, CAEV, kid care.
American Dairy Goat Association. The largest dairy goat registry in the U.S. Offers links to breeders, listed by state, and some basic goat information.
American Goat Society. This organization registers only prebred goats.
Miniature Dairy Goat Association. A budding registry for the increasingly popular miniature breeds - mini-Manchas, mini-Nubians, mini-Obers, etc - crosses between full-size and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
American Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Association. Not strictly a registry but a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Nigerian Dwarf, the smallest of the dairy breeds.
Nigerian Dwarf Goat Association. The Nigerian Dwarf Goat Association has an excellent, informative site. Unfortunately we have had problems accessing the site because it is apparently too popular for its own good - it goes offline when its bandwidth limits have been exceeded, which happens regularly, in our experience. Registers Nigerians only, sanctions shows, and sells a range of "Dwarf"-branded gear and merchandise. Good gifts for ND lovers.
Buster & Pinky. Not a goat site, as you will see, but an excellent site, especially for kids, about two canine friends and the trouble they get into.
Kim Zumwalt. Kim Zumwalt is an extraordinary photographer who lives near us. She specializes in animal photography and has done some really excellent portraits.
Gambrel Farm. Gambrel Farm is owned by a neighbor family here on the Key Peninsula. They raise Haflinger horses, an extraordinary Austrian breed. We have a Haflinger here - he is a wonderful horse with a great disposition.
